Nappy Free Household

It’s official – there are no babies in my household! My youngest son is out of nappies and is officially a big boy.

It’s been a month or two now and it feels so good to be avoiding the nappy aisle in the supermarket. Not to mention never having to change a wriggling and sometimes smelly person ever again.

There is a lot to celebrate once your child passes the nappy wearing stage, however, I must admit I do have a little twinge of sadness.

Not because I want to be changing nappies forever, but it is a sign that this little person is not so little any more. It is one of many milestones children reach as they move toward being more independent and self sufficient. . .

Over The Top Kids Parties

Both of my son’s birthdays are approaching. It’s an exciting time for them and me. However, I am always mindful of what is appropriate as far as a party is concerned.

My soon-to-be six year old is keen to invite his whole class to his birthday party. Of course that’s not going to happen. 25 kids are too many as far as I am concerned.

So is hiring clowns, renting ponies or even hiring a party planner to take control of the afternoon.

Surely pass the parcel, pin the tail on the donkey, a homemade cake and some reasonably ‘healthy’ party food is still ok for our little darlings? . . .

What is the Tooth Fairy paying in your house?

After seeing many of his classmates gummy grins for most of the year, my five year old is finally one of the crowd with the loss of his first milk tooth.

After hanging on by literally a thread for weeks, it came out in the middle of the night during a family camping trip.  “Mum, hold this” he whispered from his sleeping bag around 2.00am.  “Ok, but let’s wait until we get home before we put this out for the tooth fairy” I mumbled.  Clearly I wasn’t prepared to be playing tooth fairy in a tent. . .

The Great Outdoors!

Now that spring has well and truly sprung, let’s hope it’s the end of the tummy bugs, flu and colds that have plagued many families over the winter months.

It’s just great to get back outdoors again. For something so simple it’s easy to forget just how important it is for kids to be playing outside every day.  It’s great for their bodies, minds, learning and social development as well.

Do you know that only one third of kids these days spend time playing outside each day?  Compare that to when we were kids, when all you did was play outside. Our parents had to virtually drag us in once it got dark. . .

Kids and Screen Time

Did you get to see the Youtube video of a 1 year old trying to use a magazine like an ipad?  To some it might be cute, but I found it a little bit scary.

I know that technology is all around us, and I also know that it is really useful.  My personal view is that really young ones don’t need to be using it. From everything I have read, children under two shouldn’t be exposed to any screen time whatsoever. This includes computers, phones, tablets, handheld games, dvds and even television.

I live in a household where many of these things do exist and it is hard to minimise any active or passive exposure to them, especially the television. . .
